Sarah Gibbons: Return of the Generalist UX Designer

Sarah Gibbons from Nielsen Norman Group posted recently about the return of the generalist UX designer. While being able to leverage AI to complete tasks that would otherwise require specialist training, these designers "focus on a broad range of skills, are adaptable to different situations, and are sound strategic thinkers."

She emphasises prioritising transferable skills such as "critical thinking, facilitation, and the ability to navigate ambiguity — skills that are timeless and can't be replaced by AI."

She notes that these designers "facilitate directions across disciplines, exploring adjacent fields as the boundaries between disciplines blur."

It's a skillset best developed in an organisation with "broad roles."
